Gary Botting is considered an expert on extradition law in Canada. He has also written and lectured extensively on government restrictions on civil liberties and human rights, including its attacks on freedom of speech, freedom of expression, freedom of the press, freedom of conscience, and freedom of religion - especially freedoms fought for and won by Jehovah's Witnesses. In 1984, after the RCMP seized books from the stacks of The University of Calgary library, Botting became particularly vocal in his opposition to the then little-known practice of book banning and book burning by Canada Customs and the RCMP - a practice which Botting exposed as an expert witness in successive trials concerned with freedom of the press. In the hugely unpopular case R. v. Zundel, his expert testimony was instrumental in having the charge of spreading false news rendered unconstitutional. "I did not agree for a minute with Zundel's published opinions," he said, "but believe strongly that ideas, however unsavory, should be tested, not in the criminal courts, but in the free marketplace of ideas." He added: "Where published ideas result in demonstrable harm for an individual or a minority group, the victim has recourse to the civil courts and human rights tribunals - and more power to them. But never should ideas, beliefs or opinions be proscribed by criminal prosecution. That is the thin edge of the wedge for a broader suspension of civil liberty."

Gary Botting's interest in law preceded his call to the bar by several years. As a journalist, he often covered the court beat. On more than one occasion, Botting got himself arrested in order to get the "inside" story, managing to obtain information against government officials sufficient to shut down a human smuggling ring in Macao and Hong Kong (for example), and sufficient to shut down an antiquated prison in Lindsay, Ontario. Later, as vice president of Victims of Law - Dilemma (VOLD), Botting was an outspoken critic of the Law Society of Alberta and the Law Society of British Columbia. While still a law student, he helped pressure these societies to appoint lay benchers to review the conduct of lawyers involved in fraud. Called to the bar in British Columbia in 1991, he became an active proponent of human rights, especially the rights of visible minorities, including refugees and First Nations persons facing extradition or deportation. He is currently working to expose cases of wrongful conviction in Canada, and is researching and writing a book on Donald Marshall, Jr., Guy Paul Morin, Thomas Sophonow, and in particular David Milgaard - the godfather of Botting's four grandchildren.
